KAZAK COMPOSITES PARTICIPATES IN LOCAL
“INTRODUCE A GIRL TO ENGINEERING DAY”
Company Hopes to Encourage More Girls to Pursue Careers in Engineering
WOBURN, MA, March 4, 2010 – KaZaK Composites, Inc., a premier provider of high value-added composite engineering and design, today announced it participated in the “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” at JFK and Joyce Middle Schools in Woburn, MA this week. The day is sponsored in conjunction with National Engineers Week, which was February 14-20, 2010. The events at JFK and Joyce were scheduled to accommodate school’s winter break week.
In each of the schools, eighth grade girls were presented to by three engineers from KaZaK. Over 80 girls from each school were able to hear about why they chose engineering as a profession, how they got started, what kinds of projects they've been involved in and what a day in the life is like being an engineer. “We've been doing this for several years now at JFK and decided to include Joyce starting in 2009,” said Darcy Hornberger, one of the presenting engineers. “We tried to put together a presentation that shows the fun side of engineering and explain to them why we chose engineering as a career. By introducing them to engineering in the eighth grade, we hope to get girls to start thinking about engineering earlier in their academic careers so they can take elective classes in high school to prepare them to be engineering majors in college. We hope this day will encourage them to try something they might not have thought of.”
According to the National Engineers Week Foundation, less than 10% of American engineers are women. The National Society of Professional Engineers hopes that by organizing more events like this they will be able to add to the diversity in companies that employ engineers. “KaZaK is proud to employ several female engineers as part of our talented team,” said Susan Ricci, HR director at KaZaK. “This event is a way for our engineers to connect with girls at a time when they are just starting to think about their future. And it also allows the girls to get some information on what's like to be an engineer from women who have built successful careers after studying engineering. KaZaK encourages this learning process by offering summer internships as well."
The engineers who presented from KaZaK were Darcy Hornberger, Jessica Rader and Rachel Gabriel.
