KAZAK COMPOSITES INTRODUCES LOW DRAG, UNDERWATER ACOUSTIC SOURCE FOR SEA SURFACE-BASED MINE SWEEPING
Simple, Lightweight Acoustic Transducer Can Greatly Increase Crew Safety

ARLINGTON, VA, June 2, 2008  – KaZaK Composites, Inc., a premier provider of high value-added composite engineering and design, today announced at the 2008 Navy Opportunity Forum that they have developed and manufactured a low drag, underwater acoustic source for sea surface-based mine sweeping.  The simple, lightweight acoustic transducer is capable of simulating the sound of passing ships, thereby triggering acoustic mines.  Also, the low drag of KaZaK’s hardware permits the transducer to be towed by an unmanned surface vehicle.

“Compatibility with unmanned vehicles is key,” says John Schickling, EVP and COO of KaZaK Composites.  “This feature allows the Navy to protect the safety of their crew while detecting and neutralizing the most modern underwater mines.  The system can be autonomously deployed and retrieved from unmanned surface vehicles, separating personnel from harm’s way.”

In addition to the lightweight, durable composite materials that make up the transducer, the Navy also required tailorable frequency spectrums to simulate a passing ship.  KaZaK’s design has hydrofoils for variable depth control and variable low frequency adjustments to produce different signatures.  The system will decrease the Navy’s dependence on expensive high-demand aircraft assets, greatly increase resource availability and reduce operational costs.
