KAZAK COMPOSITES INTRODUCES ACOUSTIC VECTOR
SENSOR (AVS) MOUNT

Mount Is Suitable for Small Platforms Such As UUVs

ARLINGTON, VA, June 7, 2010  – KaZaK Composites, Inc., a premier provider of high value-added composite engineering and design, today announced it has created an acoustic vector sensor (AVS) mount that combines the essential benefits of existing mounts without compromising the performance of the AVS.  While existing sensor technology is typically a direct attachment or a towed array, each of these solutions presents its own drawbacks – direct attachments are often difficult to isolate from UUV interference and towed arrays can create vehicle drag and entanglement issues.

"KaZaK's design is a 3-axis sensor mount with a soft, dissipative elastomeric damping material sandwiched between two metal plates," notes Brian Smith, Director of Engineering at KaZaK Composites.  "The elastomeric damping material utilized in this design greatly reduces the transmission of noise and vibration to the vector sensor while simultaneously minimizing inertial effects due to acceleration."

KaZaK's design is a passive design consisting of a sensor mounting plate which is connected to a vehicle mounting plate via three orthogonal planes.  The choice and layout of this material is tuned to absorb and attenuate the frequencies of interest.  The three orthogonal plane design ensures that any vibrational noise traveling through the mount to the sensor must pass through at least two shear planes.

Additionally, the materials used to construct the mount are buoyancy neutral, lightweight and corrosion resistant.  By directly mounting the AVS to the vehicle, maneuverability of the vehicle is increased while vehicle drag and entanglement issues are greatly decreased.
